Living Off Campus? Read These Tips!

10:00 AM

This semester I'm going to be living off campus...again. At home with my mom, to be exact. But now that I've spent nearly a year as a commuter student, I've learned quite a bit. Here are a few tips I have for you.

Meal Prep, Meal Prep, Meal Prep

I cannot stress the importance of cooking your meals ahead of time. Depending on your circumstance, this can mean you're always ready for lunch or dinner and can make your morning routine so much simpler and faster.

Try using Pinterest or Youtube for ideas on cool and yummy recipes specifically made for meal prepping. I really enjoy Buzzfeed's Tasty videos are great for ideas and they give you instructions! Plus, many planners come with a "Dinner" or "Menu" section. If yours does, I would suggest using it.

Find a Cool On-Campus Hangout Spot

If your schedule is anything like mine, you have a nice little 4-hour gap between some of your classes. Which means that a nice hangout spot is necessary so you can wait out the time between classes.

This can be the library, on-campus coffee shop, a computer lab, or an old tree. Find what works for you.

But, make sure you have an alternative spot just in case someone else thinks that your spot is cool too. Or you could kick up a conversation with them and have a new hang out buddy.

Join a Club

One issue many commuter/off-campus students have is being engaged with their campus. One way to feel more engaged and actually enjoy your college experience is to join a club. Most schools have more than 50 clubs that you can join.

Can't find a club you like or one that fits your schedule? Try making your own. You never know how many people find your interest just as interesting.

Get to Know Your Transportation

If you don't have a car, you should get very familiar with your local transportation system. Whether you take the bus, taxi, Uber, or Lyft. If you know your way to campus, it makes your commute and time in university or college way more fun and manageable.

Use Social Media to Connect with Other Off-Campus Students

Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are a great way to connect with other students that commute. If you meet someone that lives in your area and has a similar schedule, you can try carpooling or set up study hang outs in your area.

It's a great way to make friends and stay on top of your school work.

Make Awesome Music Playlist

This one is kind of odd, but when I first became a commuter student I spent 20 minutes commuting to school 3 times a week and my Spotify Playlist really helped make the time go by. It's also super fun to rock out in the parking lot.

Your music playlist can also help you study or stay busy while you wait for your next class.

These are just some of the things you can do to help with being a commuter/off-campus student. What are some of the tips you've seen out on the internet? Is there anything you wanted me to add here? Let me know in the comments.

Also, feel free to start a conversation with me over on Twitter or Instagram! I'd love to hear from you.
